Alcohol misuse: screening and counseling
Screening for misuse of alcohol is recommended for adults ages 18 years or older.
Aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease
Aspirin therapy, to reduce risk of a heart attack, is recommended for men ages 45 to 79 years, who are not at increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Aspirin therapy, to reduce risk of an ischemic stroke, is recommended for women ages 55 to 79 years, who are not at increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Blood pressure screening in adults
Recommended screening for high blood pressure in adults ages 18 years or older.
Breast cancer screening
The USPSTF recommends screening mammography for women, with or without clinical breast examination, every 1 to 2 years for women ages 50 years and older.**
Cervical cancer screening
For women ages 21 to 65 years, a pap smear is recommended every three years. If HPV testing is included, pap smear testing may be extended to every five years. For women with a cervix and high risk factors (e.g. history of an abnormal pap smear, positive HPV testing, etc.), Frequency of testing should be discussed with your healthcare professional.
Cholesterol abnormalities screening
Recommended screening for men ages 35 years and older for lipid disorders.
Recommended screening for men ages 20 to 35 years for lipid disorders if they are at increased risk for coronary heart disease.
Recommended screening for women ages 45 years and older for lipid disorders if they are at increased risk for coronary heart disease. Recommended screening for women ages 20 to 45 years for lipid disorders if they are at increased risk for coronary heart disease.
Colorectal cancer screening
Population screening programs between the ages of 50 and 75 years using any of the following 3 regimens will be approximately equally effective in life-years gained, Assuming 100% adherence to the same regimen for that period:
1) annual high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing,
2) sigmoidoscopy every 5 years combined with high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing every 3 years, and
3) screening colonoscopy at intervals of 10 years.
Depression screening: adults including pregnant and postpartum women
Screening for depression in adults, with options for support, treatment and follow-up, should be discussed with your healthcare professional.
Diabetes screening
Annual blood glucose testing is recommended for adults ages 40 to 70 years who are overweight or obese.
Vitamin D supplementation
Vitamin D supplementation is recommended for adults ages 65 years and older. This should be discussed with your healthcare professional.
Folic acid supplementation
For women of potential childbearing age, daily folic acid supplementation of 0.4 to 0.8mg (400 to 800 µg) is recommended. This should be discussed with your healthcare professional.
Healthy diet and physical activity counseling
Adults who are overweight, obese and who have additional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, should discuss healthy diet and physical activity options with your healthcare professional.
Hepatitis C virus infection screening
Recommended screening for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in persons at high risk for infection. The USPSTF also recommends offering one-time screening for HCV infection to adults born between 1945 and 1965. Screening is also recommended for all adult age groups with high risk factors, such as IV drug use, organ transplants and blood transfusions received prior to 1992.
Obesity screening and counseling
Recommended screening for all adults for obesity. Clinicians should offer or refer patients with a body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher to intensive, multicomponent behavioral interventions.
Tobacco use counseling and interventions: non-pregnant adults
Tobacco users are advised to discuss cessation methods with your healthcare professional.
